Steve Jobs 1983 autograph letter sells for $479,939

@niklassSo a fan named L.N. Varon sent Steve Jobs a letter in 1983 asking for an autograph. Jobs wrote back on official Apple letterhead, thanking him for reaching out but explaining that he just didn't do signatures. Cool, fair enough. Then you get to the bottom of the page and there it is. Signed. Steven P. Jobs, Chairman, Board of Directors. The whole thing sat around for decades before RR Auction put it up, and someone paid $479,939 for a letter where the guy says he won't sign autographs and then signs it. That's the most expensive polite no I've ever heard of, man.

The image focuses on Steve Jobs and a letter he signed. Steve Jobs is shown in profile, looking thoughtfully towards the viewer, with his hand resting on his chin. Beside him is a letter on Apple Computer Inc. letterhead, dated May 11, 1983, which contains his signature. The mood is historical and impactful, highlighting a notable moment in Apple's history. The text overlay reads: STEVE JOBS SAID HE DIDN'T SIGN AUTOGRAPHS. THEN HE SIGNED THE LETTER. The contradiction turned a simple reply into one of the most talked-about pieces of Apple history. The letter itself states: "I'm honored that you'd write, but I'm afraid I don't sign autographs." Below the signature, it reads: Steven P. Jobs, Chairman, Board of Directors.
