Pension funds exit AI trade as index funds keep buying

@tim_officialIndex funds don't have a sell button. That's the whole story here. Think about who's been quietly walking away from the AI trade: Australian Retirement Trust, sitting on $260 billion. La Caisse, $388 billion. People's Pension, which trimmed its US equity weighting from 53% down to 49%. Their line is that this is rebalancing, not a verdict on AI, and sure, take that at face value. But the survey numbers are harder to wave off. 430 institutions managing $5 trillion between them, and a third say they'll cut US exposure within the next year. That's double the share who said the same a year earlier. The stated reason keeps coming back to one thing: more than a third of the S&P 500's value now rides on bets about AI infrastructure. The Nasdaq closed at a record the same day all this was being reported. So the professionals are heading for the exit. Who's left holding the bag? Probably you, and probably without realizing it. Here's the mechanism. A big chunk of retirement savings lives in index funds, and an index fund allocates by market cap. The larger a company's value grows, the bigger its slice of your money becomes. A fund can carry the word global on the label and still park around 64% of its capital in US stocks, simply because US equities got that large. Nobody at the fund is empowered to look at a stock and decide it's too expensive. Nobody can decide a third of the portfolio in a single theme is too much. So the buying continues into whatever already went up, every pay period, on repeat. That leaves two kinds of retirement money sitting on opposite ends of the same bet. One pool has a human being paid to study valuations and pull back when the risk stops making sense. That pool is retreating from AI. The other pool is yours, and nothing inside it is making a decision. It follows a default, and the default says buy more of whatever already rose. Which means the pensions get an automatic counterparty that can't refuse. Every bubble needs a greater fool, and this one installed the fool directly into us. The greater fool used to be a person. Now it's the default setting on retirement accounts. And the timing is what makes it sting. Anthropic is reportedly preparing to list in mid-November at a valuation near $2 trillion, with the offering potentially raising up to $100 billion. That would be the largest stock sale in history. So the most careful buyers on the planet are stepping back at the exact moment the biggest wave of AI supply is about to hit the market. Somebody has to take the other side of that trade. The pension funds insist they're just rebalancing and still believe in AI, and maybe this run keeps going. But look at who gets to rebalance. A professional can trim when prices look stretched. Your fund doesn't have that button.
