    India poverty rate decline 2000-2026

    The poverty rate in India has shown a steady decline over more than two decades. Here is the year by year breakdown. 2000: 39.4 percent 2001: 38.1 percent 2002: 36.8 percent 2003: 35.4 percent 2004: 34.1 percent 2005: 32.8 percent 2006: 31.5 percent 2007: 30.2 percent 2008: 28.9 percent 2009: 27.8 percent 2010: 27.4 percent 2011: 27.1 percent 2012: 25.1 percent 2013: 23.2 percent 2014: 21.2 percent 2015: 19.3 percent 2016: 17.3 percent 2017: 15.4 percent 2018: 13.5 percent 2019: 11.5 percent 2020: 10.2 percent 2021: 7.8 percent 2022: 5.3 percent 2023: 4.1 percent 2024: 3.2 percent 2025: 2.4 percent 2026: 1.7 percent (current projection) Note that the World Bank traditionally tracks extreme poverty using the International Poverty Line. Following its recent formal revision, the baseline is measured at the $3.00 a day benchmark (adjusted for 2021 purchasing power parity). Source is the World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP) along with Government of India Press Information Bureau (PIB) historical datasets.
