Chinese Population in Japan

The number of Chinese residents in Japan has shown consistent growth over the past two and a half decades. Here is how the population has changed year by year. In 2000 the figure stood at around 336,000. It rose to about 350,000 in 2001, then reached roughly 370,000 in 2002. The count continued upward to approximately 390,000 in 2003 and 420,000 in 2004. By 2005 the population had climbed to some 450,000. It increased to around 480,000 in 2006, 510,000 in 2007, and 530,000 in 2008. The following year saw the total hit about 550,000, followed by 570,000 in 2010. Growth persisted with roughly 590,000 recorded in 2011, 610,000 in 2012, 630,000 in 2013, and 650,000 in 2014. The population then expanded to approximately 680,000 in 2015 and 700,000 in 2016. In 2017 the number reached about 730,000. It grew to around 760,000 in 2018, 800,000 in 2019, and then dipped slightly to 780,000 in 2020. Recovery followed with roughly 810,000 in 2021. The total stood at some 822,000 in 2022 before climbing to approximately 850,000 in 2023. Official figures show about 873,000 in 2024, with projections indicating the community will surpass 900,000 in 2025 and reach more than 930,000 in 2026. Chinese residents, who are mainly nationals of the People's Republic of China, represent the largest foreign group in Japan. The steady expansion has been fueled by students, professionals, business owners, and families. Most live in the Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, and Kobe areas.
