During World War I, physicist Marie Curie, who had already won a Nobel Prize, developed mobile X-ray units that were sent to the front lines. These vehicles, known as "radiological cars," allowed military surgeons to assess wounds with greater accuracy, frequently avoiding needless amputations when a limb could still be saved.
