    The Beatles rooftop performance London

    The Beatles were deep in the Let It Be sessions back in January 1969, dealing with tensions that eventually led George Harrison to temporarily walk out before the rooftop show. They decided to take their raw energy to the roof of Apple Corps at 3 Savile Row in London for a final public blast. On a cold and windy afternoon on January 30, 1969, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Billy Preston took the stage for a 42-minute set that included multiple takes of Get Back, Don't Let Me Down, I've Got a Feeling, One After 909, and Dig a Pony. The crowd gathered in the streets while office workers peered from windows, bringing central London traffic to a complete standstill until the Metropolitan Police arrived following noise complaints to ask them to stop. John Lennon closed the show by saying I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we've passed the audition. This was The Beatles' final public performance together before they recorded Abbey Road, and within a year of the performance, The Beatles officially announced their split. More than five decades later, the footage remains one of the most iconic moments in music history.
