That question is Road to Perdition, and it flipped the Tom Hanks archetype Hollywood had spent decades building. Here he is a hitman who kills without hesitation, and terrifying is the right word for him, not nice. A boy watches his own father execute a man, then the same father becomes the target of violence. Superhero deaths have nothing on this. The whole narrative is about redemption, and it earns every bit of that weight. One road, one son, and a last shot at redemption that might not even be there.
