Paul Scholes on United running stats

Giggsy would not even open the table when Scholes sent it over. asked if he had looked, got a no back, and the reason is sitting right there in the numbers. fourteenth for distance covered. eighteenth for sprints. nineteenth for high-speed runs. outrun in every match bar the one where City played a man down. flip back to Amorim and United topped all of those categories. Scholes never pretended to enjoy the football, he was saying so while it was happening. the running though was non-negotiable. eighty-fifth minute, legs gone, still going. week after week. training under Carrick is shorter and sharper now and that got a round of applause. then two-nil up at Old Trafford against Brighton and everything stops. Scholes went back through it. once the second goal lands the running dies. players waiting on the bench, waiting for the night to rescue them. he told Giggsy Roy would have taken the bus keys off them for that. Giggsy laughed. then he stopped laughing. that is the part nobody wants to say out loud. Amorim did not get the results, Scholes says so himself. his argument is that the old statistics were honest and the current ones are not. call it control, call it Carrick-ball, he sees a side treating the running as optional. and if none of it bothers you, his words, you never played for this club.
