Velvet-fronted Nuthatch Sitta frontalis

Sitta frontalis goes by Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, a compact passerine placed in the nuthatch family Sittidae. Southern Asia is home base: Nepal, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, then onward through south China to Indonesia. Bark is where the insects live, so trunks and branches get worked over in search of them. Getting down a vertical trunk headfirst, or hanging along the underside of a horizontal limb, comes down to toes built with strong claws. Dense tree cover is the habitat it wants, and other species often turn up foraging alongside it in mixed flocks. Look at an adult male and there is a black stripe sitting behind and above the eye. Listen and you may catch a fast chipping call note. For nesting it takes tree cavities and holes, many of them originally carved out by woodpeckers or barbets. Photo
