Ninety-four minutes, and Damien Chazelle spends them making a drum kit feel less like an instrument and more like a psychological war zone. Whiplash dropped in 2014, and it's not really a jazz story, it's a war film wearing jazz clothes. J.K. Simmons plays a mentor so terrifying he probably haunts people's practice rooms. Four stars from me, that runtime does not waste a second.
