Jürgen Klopp on Gakpo goal

Ruben van Bommel earned his first international cap against Germany and immediately set up Cody Gakpo for a late equalizer, a moment Jürgen Klopp says he had to watch again before calling the striker. The manager noted that while the finish belonged entirely to Gakpo, it was the pass that made him smile because Van Bommel chose to play the ball rather than focus on the occasion of his debut. Klopp described the situation as the work of a true footballer who isn't looking for approval in the stands, praising Gakpo for remaining calm under pressure when it mattered most. He recalled advising Gakpo back at Liverpool to do more than just score, urging him to make the player next to him look like they belong. Tonight, according to Klopp, the young defender made Cody appear exactly as he is, leading the manager to send a message that Ruben's father should be proud. He confirmed he saw the whole thing unfold with one pass and one finish representing the entire sport.
