The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 1994

Priscilla didn't age well because it was already perfect the moment it landed. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert arrived in 1994 with a bus crossing the desert and more raw honesty about friendship, grief, and performance than most prestige dramas have managed since then. The costumes won the Oscar, but the nerve should have won everything else. Every road movie thinks it's profound just because someone stares out a window, yet Priscilla stares out a window in a silver corset and a feather headdress on a bus named after a queen while still finding time to be funnier than your favorite indie film. Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, and Terence Stamp play a mechanic, a lip-sync performer, and a father who shows up late and still breaks you. This is the rare film that treats drag as craft, exile as comedy, and chosen family as the only plot that matters. Thirty years later the bus is still moving. It offers a better perspective on masculinity than most movies about masculinity. The straight men are reduced to punchlines, threats, or repairs while the leads handle the emotional labor, the comedy, and the driving duties. The setting isn't the villain; smallness is. Two drag queens and a transgender woman take a job in the middle of nowhere because the city has already used them up. When the bus breaks down and the towns stare, somebody still has to hit the cue. The destination is irrelevant compared to the outfits.
