    Hamburger Hill 1987 review

The idea that Hamburger Hill makes Platoon look like a Pixar film isn't just a comparison; it's the only way to describe how this movie strips away every layer of cinematic glory. There are no superhero speeches here, just pure, grinding attrition where every single foot of mud costs a life. It didn't need Hollywood melodrama to break your heart because it showed the raw, absurd horror of fighting for terrain you give up the next day. This is an underrated masterpiece that feels less like a war film and more like an extreme documentary on history's worst middle management. Hamburger Hill runs for 110 minutes of watching military leadership order young men to sprint up a vertical mudslide into a meat grinder, only to immediately abandon the location. Set in 1969 Vietnam, the story follows a U.S. Army squad tasked with capturing a fortified mountain where ten assaults result in mounting casualties. The narrative doesn't rely on famous movie stars or Oscar bait campaigns. Instead, it was carried by an ensemble cast who bled into every frame, giving voice to teenage draft conscripts forgotten by history. These characters are portrayed as teenagers drafted into a trap where the mountain functions as a death sentence rather than a victory. A film that doesn't glorify combat but relentlessly honors the boys who were destroyed by it.
