    Law of Desire Almodóvar 1987

Antonio's problem isn't that he loves Pablo. It's that he can't let the breakup be a breakup, and Pedro Almodóvar builds an entire film out of where that refusal goes. Law of Desire came out in 1987 and it's Spanish, and the version of obsession it's selling has nothing to do with sweet romance. Desire here hardens into possession, and the movie tracks every stage of that hardening. Juan is the one who dies for it. Antonio reads him as competition for Pablo, jealousy does the rest, and the murder is the point where you stop wondering how far this man will go. But Antonio doesn't vanish after the violence. He works his way into Pablo's sister and family, so Pablo can't just walk away from him. Add the letters that keep arriving and the fixation that won't quit even when Pablo says no, and the emotional dependence starts to feel genuinely disturbing. Then comes the final confrontation, and the thing that chills is how little room Antonio's version of love leaves for Pablo to be free. Possession has fully replaced whatever affection started this. So the question Law of Desire actually asks isn't whether Antonio loves Pablo. It's what happens when love becomes an excuse to control someone 🍿
