Nando's

Nando's began in 1987 when two friends, Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin, walked into a modest Portuguese-inspired eatery in Johannesburg, South Africa. They were so taken with the flame-grilled chicken and its fiery peri-peri sauce that they bought the place on the spot. Naming it after Fernando's nickname, they set out to share this blend of African heat and Portuguese grilling tradition with the world. The recipe, built around African bird's eye chilies and a 24-hour marinade, became the backbone of a global fast-casual chain.

Today, Nando's operates more than 1,200 outlets across 30 countries, with a strong presence in the UK, Australia, South Africa, and the United States. The brand is instantly recognizable by its Rooster of Barcelos logo, a nod to Portuguese folklore. Its menu stretches beyond chicken to include halloumi, macho peas, Portuguese custard tarts, sandwiches, and salads, all anchored by that signature peri-peri kick. In the US, meals start at $9.99, and the brand has been steadily expanding its footprint, now reaching seven markets including Chicago, Houston, and Dallas.

Ownership has remained in the Enthoven family since the 1990s, when Dutch-born businessman Dick Enthoven acquired a stake and later became sole owner. After his death in 2022, his family took the reins. While financial figures stay private, the chain's cult following and cheeky marketing, especially in the UK, have made it a cultural touchstone. Recent 2026 moves include a SoHo pop-up in New York City, a collaboration with soccer star Bukayo Saka on a limited-edition sauce, and a new Atlanta location at Krog Street Market. [編集]
