概要
The G7, or Group of Seven, brings together the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union joins in but doesn't hold the rotating presidency. It's not a formal organization with a charter or secretariat; decisions aren't legally binding. Instead, the G7 works through political consensus and the combined weight of its members, who together account for roughly 40% of global GDP and about 10% of the world's population.
What started as a response to the economic chaos of the 1970s has grown into a forum that tackles nearly every major global issue. The first summit in 1975 focused on exchange rates and energy. Today, the agenda spans climate change, digital regulation, gender equality, global health, and security. Summits produce joint declarations that set directions, but each country implements them in its own way.
The G7 has no permanent home. Leadership rotates annually, and the presidency country hosts the leaders' summit and sets priorities for the year. Ministerial meetings and a sherpa track keep the work going between summits. Critics note the group's exclusivity, since China and India aren't at the table, and its commitments are only political. Still, the G7 remains a powerful symbol of democratic solidarity and a key place for coordinating responses to crises, from financial meltdowns to pandemics.
The G7 exists to give the world's leading industrialized democracies a space to coordinate policy on the issues that matter most. Originally, that meant economic cooperation: stabilizing currencies, fighting inflation, and managing energy shocks. Over time, the focus has widened to include peace and security, climate action, sustainable development, digital rules, gender equality, and health. The group aims to craft common approaches among like-minded nations, using their combined economic and political clout to shape global agendas and norms. Since its commitments are political rather than binding, the G7 relies on peer pressure and shared values to turn words into action.
