This dedication followed a private funeral service held on December 22, 2017, at the Seongsu-dong YMCA Gymnasium in Seoul, where members of SHINee and various celebrities paid their respects before his ashes were interred at the family grave in Incheon. The news of his passing triggered an immediate outpouring of grief globally, with hundreds of fans gathering outside his residence in Itaewon on December 19, 2017, to hold vigils while major international media outlets published extensive coverage regarding the impact on the K-pop community.

Kim Jong-hyun was found dead in his apartment in the Itaewon district of Seoul on December 18, 2017, at approximately 5:30 PM KST after failing to appear for a scheduled recording session.
