Lothar Matthäus remains a towering figure in German sports culture, his name chanted by Bayern Munich crowds as "der Kapitän" even decades after retirement. This enduring status is quantified by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings, which place him as the 26th most famous person in Germany and the 43rd most famous person from Germany. These positions have held steady through recent cycles, reflecting a consistent level of public attention that spans generations. While he lacks a formal, named fandom like those seen in modern pop music, his support base is deeply embedded within the broader identities of the German national team and the clubs where he played. Fans do not organize under a specific banner for him alone; instead, they celebrate his milestones through general social media tributes and stadium rituals reserved for national heroes. The absence of a dedicated collective identity does not diminish his reach. His legacy is defined by verified historical achievements rather than organized fan campaigns or chart pushes. He is widely remembered for leading West Germany to victory in the 1990 World Cup and holding the record for most international caps. However, his modern mythology has shifted. Recent commentary regarding the national team's failures, including controversial remarks about families and host nations, has made him a polarizing subject of intense debate. This duality, venerated captain versus combative pundit, keeps him relevant in daily discourse without requiring a structured fan movement.[編集]

Lothar Matthäus was the first outfield player to appear in five FIFA World Cups, holding the record for most matches played (25) until Lionel Messi surpassed it in 2022. Diego Maradona called him "the best rival I've ever had," a sentiment echoed during their intense battles in the 1986 and 1990 tournaments. He briefly released a single in 1994 titled "Wir sind die Champions" and speaks five languages: German, English, Italian, French, and some Serbian. His accolades include induction into the German Football Museum Hall of Fame, Bayern Munich Hall of Fame, and Inter Milan Hall of Fame, alongside the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany received in 1990. Pelé selected him for the FIFA 100 list in 2004, while he also ranked #15 in World Soccer's 100 Greatest Players of the 20th Century and #19 in FourFourTwo's 2020 edition. Cover stories on Kicker, Sport Bild, World Soccer, France Football, and Der Spiegel cemented his media presence. A story fans still retell involves multiple car thefts targeting him during his tenure at Inter Milan, where a global superstar faced common criminal issues in Italy. In recent commentary regarding Germany's exit against Paraguay, Matthäus sparked debate by blaming "WAGs" and family travel plans for the defeat, claiming players took free days instead of focusing on the tournament. He has no formal fanbase name, yet remains a polarizing figure known for direct opinions. The iFANN Global Fame Rankings place him as the 27th most famous person in Germany and the 46th most famous person from Germany.[編集]
