Benito Skinner, known for viral comedy sketches, brings his first long-form series to Prime Video. Overcompensating drops all eight episodes on May 15, 2025, telling the story of Benny Scanlon, a closeted former high school football star who arrives at Yates University desperate to bury his true self under a layer of frat-boy bravado. The show is semi-autobiographical: Skinner based the central friendship on meeting a woman in college who helped him come out.

The series splits its attention between Benny's internal war and the people orbiting him. Carmen Neil, played by Wally Baram, is a sharp outsider still grieving her brother, determined to claw her way up the social ladder. Mary Beth Barone plays Grace, Benny's sister, who has contorted herself into a fake version to please her boyfriend Peter Whitney (Adam DiMarco), the campus king. Rish Shah plays Miles Hari, Benny's crush and a source of both hope and panic. The show's 2010s setting is precise: episode titles are pop songs from that era, and the soundtrack leans heavily on Lorde and Charli XCX, who serves as an executive producer.

Benny Scanlon steps onto the Yates University campus carrying a decade of carefully constructed camouflage. As a kid, he was obsessed with Britney Spears and Brendan Fraser's abs in George of the Jungle. By senior year, he had buried all of that under a homecoming crown and a football jersey. Now he's a freshman, enrolled in business classes, rushing a secret society called The Flesh and Gold Society, and trying to keep his voice from cracking when someone mentions a guy's name.

He meets Carmen Neil in the chaos of move-in day. She's sharp, funny, and nursing a grief she won't talk about: her older brother died a few years ago, and she's channeled all that pain into a plan to become someone important. The two bond instantly over cheap vodka and mutual desperation. Carmen becomes Benny's lifeline, the one person he can almost be honest with. But their friendship has a codependent edge. She needs a project; he needs a shield.

Grace Scanlon, Benny's older sister, is also at Yates, but she's barely recognizable. She used to be loud and funny. Now she's shrunk herself to match Peter Whitney, her boyfriend and the campus legend who runs The Flesh and Gold Society. Peter is all confidence and cruelty, a guy whose sense of self is so fragile he needs constant worship. Grace orbits him like a moon, slowly forgetting she was ever a planet.

Benny's crush on Miles Hari, a kind and thoughtful fellow freshman, pulls him in conflicting directions. Miles seems open-minded, maybe even interested. But Benny can't read the signals without panicking. There is an out community at Yates, personified by George (Owen Thiele), a student who moves through the world with an ease Benny envies and fears. The barriers Benny faces are mostly internal: no one is threatening him, but the voice in his head is loud enough.

The Flesh and Gold Society rituals force Benny to perform hypermasculinity on command. He chugs beers, objectifies women, and laughs at jokes that make him sick. Each initiation step is a small betrayal of himself. Carmen, meanwhile, pushes her way into Peter's orbit, trying to climb through him. The season tracks their parallel trajectories: Benny slowly cracking his shell, Carmen building a new one.

Subplots weave through the eight episodes. A Thanksgiving trip home reveals a key piece of Benny's past involving a high school friend named Sammy (Lukas Gage). Grace begins to question whether Peter's version of love is worth the cost. The show never rushes its characters toward easy answers. It lets them stumble, backtrack, and fail.
