    概要

Oxfam is an international confederation of 21 independent non-governmental organizations working together to fight poverty and injustice worldwide. Operating in about 79 countries, the organization partners with thousands of local groups to support communities in building better lives, growing resilience, and protecting livelihoods during crises. Its work spans emergency response, long-term development programs, and advocacy campaigns on issues like economic inequality, climate justice, gender equality, and fair trade.

What sets Oxfam apart is its dual approach: it delivers direct aid in disasters and conflicts while also pushing for systemic change through research and lobbying. The organization is known for its annual reports on global inequality, its network of charity shops (especially in the UK), and its voice in international forums. Oxfam describes itself as a global movement, and its confederation structure lets affiliates in different countries pursue locally relevant strategies while coordinating on global campaigns.

With a history stretching back to World War II, Oxfam has evolved from a small committee in Oxford into one of the world's most recognizable humanitarian brands. Its influence comes not just from its fundraising and field operations but from its willingness to challenge powerful governments and corporations. The organization's current focus areas include the climate crisis, tax justice, women's rights, and humanitarian response in places like Gaza, Sudan, and the Horn of Africa.

    ミッション

Oxfam's mission is to fight inequality to end poverty and injustice. The organization believes that poverty is not inevitable but is driven by unequal power structures, unfair economic systems, and discrimination. Its goal is to build a world where everyone has enough to eat, can earn a living, and has a say in the decisions that affect them. Oxfam works to shift power and resources to the people who need them most, both through direct programs and by influencing policies at national and global levels.

    歴史

Oxfam was born on October 5, 1942, when a group of Quakers, academics, and social activists gathered at the Old Library in Oxford to form the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief. Their immediate goal was to get food through the Allied blockade to starving civilians in Nazi-occupied Greece. The committee raised about 370,000 pounds for the Greek Red Cross, a huge sum at the time. After the war, the group turned its attention to the rest of Europe and then to developing countries.

In 1945, Oxfam opened its first permanent charity shop on Broad Street in Oxford, a model that would become a hallmark of its fundraising. The name Oxfam, taken from the postal abbreviation, became official in 1965. The 1960s and 1970s saw rapid growth, with affiliates forming in Canada (1963), America (1970), and other countries. Oxfam America was launched specifically to respond to the Bangladesh independence war crisis.

The creation of Oxfam International in 1994 marked a shift from a loose network of national committees to a coordinated global confederation. The Secretariat was established in 1995, originally based in Oxford but later moved to Nairobi in the 2010s to be closer to the communities Oxfam serves. Over the decades, Oxfam has expanded its focus from emergency relief to long-term development, advocacy, and campaigning on structural issues like trade rules, debt, and tax avoidance. It has faced controversies, particularly around staff misconduct in Haiti and Chad, which led to major internal reforms.
