Suikoden II

Three years after the first game, Suikoden II throws you into a bitter war between the City-States of Jowston and the Kingdom of Highland. You play a young mercenary, adopted son of the hero Genkaku, who along with his best friend Jowy Atreides inherits two halves of the Rune of the Beginning. That moment kicks off a story about friendship, betrayal, and the real cost of power. Like other entries, your goal is to recruit all 108 Stars of Destiny, each with unique abilities and backstories. Combat is turn-based with a six-character party, plus one-on-one duels and large-scale army battles on a grid. Your castle base grows as you add members, unlocking facilities like a blacksmith, library, and bathhouse.

Konami developed and published the game. It hit PlayStation in Japan on December 17, 1998, then North America in September 1999 and Europe in July 2000. The 2D sprite graphics looked old next to the 3D trend of the late 90s, which hurt initial sales and reviews. But over time, critics and fans reclaimed Suikoden II as a cult classic, praising its deep narrative, memorable characters, and emotional weight. Many now rank it among the greatest RPGs ever made.

A worldwide HD remaster titled Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars launched on March 6, 2025, for Switch, PS4, PS5, Windows, Xbox One, and Series X/S. An anime adaptation from Konami Animation is set for October 2026.[編集]

Combat in Suikoden II is classic turn-based with a six-character party drawn from the 108 Stars of Destiny. Each character has a unique rune slot and weapon level, encouraging experimentation with party composition. Beyond standard battles, the game throws in one-on-one duels using rock-paper-scissors logic and large-scale army battles where you command units on a grid, positioning archers, cavalry, and infantry. Your castle serves as a central hub that expands as you recruit more Stars, unlocking a blacksmith for weapon upgrades, a library for lore, a bathhouse for character interactions, and even a cooking mini-game. The story opens with the protagonist and Jowy on a mission for the Highland Army. They meet a mysterious woman who gives them two halves of the Rune of the Beginning: the Rune of Life and the Rune of the Black Sword. Shortly after, King Luca Blight of Highland launches a brutal invasion of the City-States of Jowston. The protagonist escapes and slowly builds a resistance army, the New State Army, while Jowy, believing peace requires a different path, becomes a tragic antagonist. The narrative explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and the cost of power. The climax forces the two friends to confront their divided loyalties in an emotionally charged final battle.[編集]
